Viruses, no. Though it's not impossible that some malfeasant will eventually find a way round the authentication in OS X, it ain't happened yet.
Malware - yes there is some. A few Trojans emerged last year, a couple of them quite sophisticated, and at least one may still be a threat.
But your Mac has a built-in Quarantine Utility which gets it's definitions via Security Updates.
All the major AV software suites at best slow your Mac down, and in some cases manage to corrupt files they're meant to be scanning. They are no better than your built-in protection when it comes to definition updates, so they're not going to pick up new threats any quicker.
If you feel the need for a security blanket or want to check for Windows malware to avoid passing it on to PC users, try the free ClamXav. It's lightweight, unobtrusive and won't harm your Mac.
There are still problems with 'drive-by' downloads as there are on Windows - these use the browser and JavaScript to trick you into downloading their packages.
Best defence there is FireFox with the NoScript and AdBlock plus extensions.
Other problems - persistent pop-ups or site redirections - can occur if a site (usually a third-party ad. server) manages to install a persistent cookie either in the browser, or more likely in the Flash LSO space. These can be defeated relatively easily by blocking local storage.

Other vectors exist which are harder to remove, BUT none of these can be detected by any AV software.
Front line defence is required to stop them in their tracks.
